NHL 18, the only EA sports game that doesn’t use Frostbite, won’t be ported to Switch

EA Canada has shot down hope that NHL 18 will be ported over to the Nintendo Switch.

“While we always continue to assess opportunities, so it’s not to say that’s a hard no, it’s not on our radar at this time,” Clement Kwong said to DualShockers in a recent interview.

NHL 18 is the only EA Sports title on Xbox One and PS4 that doesn’t make use of EA’s powerful Frostbite engine. In a recent conversation with Stevivor, EA’s Sean Ramjagsingh said the developer opted for new features over the from EA’s IGNITE to Frostbite.

“With NHL 18, our sole focus was on delivering best feature set possible that best replicates the speed, skill and creativity of the new NHL,” Ramsagsingh said.

Despite using the Frostbite engine on Xbox One and PS4, the popular FIFA 18 will also release on Nintendo Switch, albeit using a “custom built” engine.

“What you have will be a custom built version for the Nintendo Switch from the FIFA development team in Vancouver,” EA’s Peter Moore confirmed earlier in the year.

What do you make of the news, hockey fans? Is it simply a case of supply and demand — or in this case, a lack on Switch?

NHL 18 will be available in full on Xbox One and PS4 from 15 September.
