New Starfield patch fixes your ship’s pet asteroid

Say it ain't so, Starfield update 1.8.88!

A new Starfield patch, update 1.8.88, has “fixed” the problem of pet asteroids for your spaceship, which I’m hoping not every player will rejoice about.

If you’ve been playing Starfield, you may have noticed that an asteroid or two will basically grow attached to your ship and follow you around wherever you go. Whilst I originally hated the bug when I first encountered it weeks ago, my little asteroid pet has grown on me. I call mine Dave.

The bug, or feature, has been around for quite some time.

“I accidentally crashed into an asteroid field and somehow ended up with this tiny rock following me around,” Soft-Illustrator1300 wrote on Reddit three months back. “I don’t remember installing a gravitational pull mod on my ship so me thinks it’s a glitch. I have tried crashing it into other objects, fast traveling, shooting at it and it simply won’t go away. It has not affected anything except my immersion. Anyone know if there is a fix for this?”

That’s the Redditor’s picture up there at top. I wonder if that player has named his pet? Regardless, today’s patch fixes that, so Dave is no longer my travelling companion, nor will Soft-Illustrator1300 have their ol’ friend. It was fun while it lasted.

FIXES AND IMPROVEMENTS

Gameplay:
  • Addressed an issue that would cause space matter to become stuck to player’s ship during space travel. Loading a save will now remove the space clingon. Please note: This fix should address any space matter being stuck in your travels, but not in instances where player ships have New Atlantis attached. A fix for that will be released in a later update.
Outpost:
  • Fixed an issue that prevents random guns from spawning in a newly created Weapon Case after loading a save.
Save/Load:
  • [MSS/Xbox] Fixed an issue where players could experience crashes while saving during long playthrough without going through the Unity.

Starfield is available on Windows PC, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X. We reviewed it here.
