Microsoft consolidate Kinect hardware for PC developers with Kinect Adapter for Windows

Microsoft has announced they will discontinue the Kinect for Windows v2 sensor, the Windows PC specific version of the Xbox One Kinect sensor. Having released the Kinect Adapter for Windows, selling two SKU’s of the Kinect sensor was deemed redundant so now PC Kinect developers can purchase the Xbox One Kinect sensor and the Adapter for the same experience.

This should cause little disruption to PC Kinect developers as the two sensors are functionally identical and the Kinect SDK is compatible with both. You’ll just have an extra round of cabling thanks to the Kinect Adapter for Windows should you jump in to Kinect development in the future.
