Microsoft brings the 2014 World Cup into the living room with Destination Brazil on Xbox One

Microsoft announced today — via Xbox Wire — that it will be launching a brand new app for Xbox One set to give fans an enhanced experience during the World Cup. Whether watching live TV, highlights, playing FIFA or delving into new interactive reality show Every Street United, the Brazil Now app will augment the experience.

Brazil Now is a part of new Xbox One hub Destination Brazil. Launching 12 June — just in time for the World Cup — Destination Brazil is Microsoft’s go to location for everything World Cup and soccer related. Fans will be able to snap Brazil Now while they watch live games which will provide score updates and real-time stat updates. Like the NFL app that launched with the Xbox One, Brazil Now is designed to work with the console’s HDMI-in for watching matches.

During games, those watching will be able to participate in polls about events in the game such as referee decisions and which team will win. By participating, viewers will receive cards that can be used to unlock team photos of which there are 96.

Working in conjunction with the OneGuide, Brazil Now is able to send notifications when a match is about to begin and tune into the right channel so a fan can watch. In the US, Xbox One owners can even use Brazil Now with apps outside Xbox TV such as ESPN. How this all works in Australia remains to be seen.

The app will highlight FIFA 14 and the “World Cup Ultimate Team” content, along with YouTube channel Copa90, a hugely popular soccer channel.

Destination Brazil will feature Every Street United, the first show in the Xbox Originals stable. The series follows footballers Thierry Henry and Edgar Davids as the travel the globe searching for eight talented footballers to partake in a 4v4 game in Rio de Janeiro. The show will be available on Xbox video and as an app on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Destination Brazil, Brazil Now and Every Street United do not require Xbox Live Gold. The hub and Brazil Now app will be available 12 June with Every Street United launching 15 June. Destination Brazil will be available in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, the U.K. and the United States.
