Marathon PvE mode called Vault Breaker, drops gear acquisition

PvE is separate from PvP

Marathon‘s new PvE mode is called Vault Breaker, and comes with a catch: gear earned in the mode stays in the mode.

“Explore Cryo Archive as a crew, duo, or solo player, taking on a progressively challenging series of vaults,” Bungie said of the mode, which debuts on 21 July.

“Grow stronger across multiple matches with progression that’s unique to Vault Breaker, and push towards the final vault and the mysterious entity within,” Bungie continued.

Players will need to equip a special Sponsored Kit to play the mode, and any gear and items found will be used to upgrade future Sponsored Kits.

“Vault Breaker requires a special Sponsored Kit to queue up, and any gear or items you find stay behind when you exfil,” Bungie said.

“The exception to this is Vault Data,” Bungie continued. “This new currency is found within vaults, and when extracted, can be exchanged for upgrades to your Vault Breaker Sponsored Kits as well as gear that can be used in other modes. This let’s you experience Cryo Archive without flooding the economy with low-risk, high-power Cryo loot.”

The game will also receive an update to its Cradle evolution system at the same time, basically further rewarding high-hour players who’ve already upgraded their Cradle fully.

“️Upon maxing out your Cradle, you’ll now be able to reset back to zero to earn one additional maximum Energy point and unlock unique cosmetics, including multiple Runner shell styles,” Bungie said.

“These cosmetics will be available later in the season, but if you unlock them ahead of time, you’ll automatically receive them once they’re available. With this change, Cradle progression speeds will also be increased.”

Marathon Season 2 is currently available on Windows PC, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PS5. We reviewed the game here.
