How Notch’s half-joke turned into $2.5 billion

In a Forbes profile, Markus ‘Notch’ Persson has revealed the story of how Microsoft ended up buying Mojang and Minecraft.

After Notch tweeted “Anyone want to buy my share of Mojang so I can move on with my life?” in June 2014 the half-joke soon turned serious as Microsoft, EA, Activision and other studios got in touch to express their interest. Microsoft were the winners of that negotiation and $2.5 billion USD later they now own Mojang (minus Notch) and Minecraft.

The full profile is an interesting one, and well worth a read for those keen to check Microsoft’s motivations for the purchase (a tax dodge) and the terms of the sale.
