Big news for God of War fans dropped over the weekend, with Sony both confirming the God of War Laufey release date alongside a confirmation of a new sequel with the man himself, Kratos.
God of War Laufey release date
First, the God of War Laufey release date has been set for 16 February 2027, exclusive to PS5.
“Enter the afterlife of the gods when God of War Laufey launches on PS5 February 16, 2027,” Sony said in a social media post that coincided with an announcement at San Diego Comic Con.
This release date is significant, of course, because it falls well ahead of Sony’s own self-imposed end date for physical game discs. That, though, didn’t stop players from spamming the post with calls to reverse course on the decision and produce physical discs for the next-gen PS6 console.
The same social media post was also hijacked by consumers who noted an hours-long disruption to the PlayStation Network that very same weekend.
In case you missed it, Laufey was announced in early June and features a story that runs parallel with 2018’s semi-styled God of War reboot. It stars Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil, True Blood) as Kratos’ wife, Laufey.
“To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods – the Everywhen – where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic,” Sony continued. “Harness Faye’s speed, control, and relentlessness to overwhelm even the fiercest of foes with decisive, deadly precision.”
A new God of War with Kratos is coming
While details are practically non-existent, Sony Santa Monica’s Cory Barlog also used San Diego Comic Con to announce that a new God of War game featuring series’ lead Kratos is coming.
At the convention, Barlog also stated that the sequel will connect directly to the events of God of War Laufey.
“Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next,” Barlog said, as per IGN. “Phranque has been around since the beginning. It’s interesting to see how to build this world out. Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing.”
