Gears of War E-Day release date set for 6 October as an Xbox console exclusive

Bad news for PS5 owners.

The Gears of War E-Day release date has been set for 6 October; what’s more, the title is no longer heading to PS5, despite allegations the game is basically finished and ready to go on that platform.

“Experience the horror and brutality of Emergence Day,” Microsoft and The Coalition said of the prequel. “Fourteen years before the original Gears of War, join Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago in a gripping origin-story campaign as the Locust Horde first erupts from below, igniting a desperate fight for survival.”

Pre-orders will get early access to an open beta planned for 6 August 2026.

Alongside today’s release date and platform news comes allegations that Microsoft had prepared “a basically finished version” of E-Day for PS5 before deciding to scrap it for Xbox console exclusivity.

“So yeah, there’s a basically finished version of Gears for PlayStation sitting on a drive,” veteran journalist Jeff Grubb has stated, following a previous statement on Giant Bomb @Nite: “Gears of War E-Day was gonna be on PS5. It’s not anymore. That just happened. That is a decision that just got made.”

Gears of War E-Day is coming 6 October to Windows PC via Steam, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and through Xbox Game Pass.
