Forspoken demo isn’t indicative of main game, says Square Enix

Don't like the demo? It doesn't matter!(?)

The Forspoken demo isn’t representative of its finished product, Square Enix has said (for better or worse).

Fans have taken to social media worried that the demo is too busy and, at the same time, devoid of substance.

“Overall pretty disappointing,” wrote Tony Bing. “Graphics look all washed out, world feels empty, combat feel pretty janky and the random swearing to be edgy just means I wouldn’t play it (if I even got it which I doubt I will) when the kids are around.”

“She talks too much during combat,” added Cero. “I want it to be more like a Dark Souls title with a Breath of the Wild spice thrown in the mix. Crafting, combos, perfect dodge, hidden treasures that give you more spells and outfits.”

“I tried to play the Demo a bit and honestly couldn’t get into it more than a 20 minutes,” wrote Slayer_Seraph. “It wasn’t fun at all, it felt unpolished, the combat felt non responsive, and the graphics were a blurry, low LOD weird looking mess. Also I couldn’t stand the main character attitude…”

Speaking to Gematsu, Creative Director Raido Mitsuno tried to alleviate fears.

“That was a specially crafted gameplay demo just to give a feel for the mechanics of parkour and magic,” he said. “So that was specifically kind of fetch quest-like in terms of the makeup, like, do these five objectives and then you get to fight a boss. So the full game isn’t actually designed like that, that was just specifically created for that demo experience.”

You can try the demo out here on PS5 if you’re interested.

Expect Forspoken on Windows PC and PS5 from 24 January 2023.
