Elden Ring performance “a mixed bag” according to Digital Foundry

Though Bandai Namco is aware of issues and working on more fixes.

Digital Foundry has declared Elden Ring‘s performance “a mixed bag” on all platforms, with issues across PC, Xbox and PlayStation.

The site says FromSoftware’s latest runs between 45-60 frames-per-second (FPS) in frame-rate mode on Xbox Series X and PS5, while quality modes range between 30-60 FPS.

It also reports that Xbox Series S & X users will greatly benefit from variable refresh rate (VRR), and that the PS4 version on PS5 is the version that achieves a consistent 60 FPS on console.

On PC, the site reports that the PC version is impacted by stutters of up to 250 milliseconds when new effects or enemies appear on-screen. It also cites “tumbling frame-time issues” that can drop frame-rates from 60 to around 40.

Speaking with Stevivor, a Bandai Namco representative noted FromSoftware is unaware of unfixed visual issues — thanks in part to reports filed by our very own reviewer Luke Lawrie — and fixes are in the works.

Luke seems to adore Elden Ring, though our review remains in progress while he completes the game proper (and maybe gets to evaluate future patches at the same time).

Update: FromSoftware has addressed some issues directly in a new statement.

“We are currently experiencing some issues that are preventing the game from playing properly under some conditions,” the developer advised. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and ask for your patience.”

It said it would focus on mouse sensitivity issues on PC, issues with Easy Anti-Cheat on Steam, frame-rate and performance issues and save data problems specific to the PS5.

Elden Ring is now available on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S & X, PS4 and PS5.
