E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial landfill site to be excavated for Atari documentary on Xbox One

Previously blocked, Fuel Industries will be able to excavate the famous Alamogorgo landfill to hopefully find a rumoured treasure trove of Atari 2600 components and thousands upon thousands of copies of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

E.T. was made back in 1982, and almost single-handedly destroyed the video game industry due to its poor quality and mass production. The Alamogordo Daily News reported in 1983 that between ten to twenty semi-trailer truckloads full of the game and other Atari components were deposited in the New Mexico landfill. Fuel Industries will excavate the site as part of a documentary on the crisis, to be presented on Xbox One later in the year.

The excavation will take place on 26 April.

Further details of the documentary can be found here.
