An external HDD must be connected to use Xbox One’s DVR

That new Xbox One feature that allows players to record TV while they play? Looks like you won’t be able to take advantage of it unless you have an external HDD plugged into your console.

Announced by the Xbox One Dashboard’s redesign Lead Richard Irving at Gamescom, Gamespot is reporting that Irving said, “You need an external hard-drive specifically for DVR because we want to keep the [storage] paths optimized between playing games and watching TV. We don’t want them to interact with each other.”

The decision makes sense as the overwhelming majority of Xbox One consoles only have a 500GB hard drive on board which (in my experience) is very quickly filled up with games. If the DVR feature used the internal drive it would likely be filled up far too quickly and thus cause problems for gamers. Especially now that Microsoft has confirmed that the DVR will record in the same quality as the broadcast; including 1080p.

Good thing Seagate is producing a 2TB HDD exclusively for Xbox One right?
