There is already a game too big for Switch’s internal storage

We know Nintendo Switch’s 32GB of internal storage is an absolute pittance — it would be laughably small for any tech savvy person’s mobile phone, let alone a game console. However, it still appeared ample for the launch period…until now.

Dragon Quest Heroes I·II is a whopping 32GB on its own, which will require a micro-SDXC card if you choose to buy it from the eShop. With some of the Switch’s storage space reserved for the operating system, early leaks showed around 25-26GB of space available for games and save data, it can’t be saved on the internal storage.

The digital size of Dragon Quest Heroes came from Nintendo Japan, along side the download sizes of several other titles:

  • Dragon Quest Heroes I·II – 32 GB
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 13.4 GB (13GB on Wii U)
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 7 GB (6.35GB on Wii U with DLC)
  • Disgaea 5 – 5.92 GB (10.3GB on PS4 before DLC)
  • Nobunaga’s Ambition – 5 GB
  • Snipperclips – 1.60 GB
  • I Am Setsuna – 1.40 GB (1.5GB on PS4)
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris – 1.09 GB

Other games, like 1-2-Switch, haven’t been listed yet.

We’ve learnt Switch physical game cards can be at least up to 32GB in size, probably even larger if required, and that going all digital is going to be difficult. The sweet point for size versus price in the micro-SDXC card market is 128GB for around $55 when on-sale — that would only fit four games the size of Dragon Quest Heroes I·II. However, unlike PS4 and Xbox One, physical games don’t require an install, as they run directly from the game card.
