Halo: The Master Chief Collection’s Halo 2 won’t run at 1080p

In an interview with IGN, 343 Executive Producer Dan Ayoub confirmed that Halo 2 inside Halo: The Master Chief Collection will not run at 1080p.

According to Ayob, Halo 2: Anniversary will be “fantastic” at 720p, and runs at a lower resolution to be able to allow for the switch between old-school and new-school graphics.

Later, Halo Development Director Frank O’Connor headed over to NeoGAF to further explain.

Halo CE Anniversary is running Xbox 360 fidelity assets at 1080p with some rendering and lighting improvements,” O’Connor explained. “H2A is running higher res textures, geo, characters and animation AND running the OG engine at the same time.”

Regardless of what the games are running in, they’ll likely be interesting to go back and revisit, but it’s interesting to see the fans’ response to the technical side of things, especially given a game with such a passionate fan base.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be available on Xbox One for the holiday season. The game also includes access to Ridley Scott’s episodic Halo: Nightfall and the Halo 5: Guardians beta.
