How to obtain, start quests in Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves doesn’t hold your hand — apart from telling you how to eat a banana, you’re on your own from the second you spawn in a seedy tavern. But never fear, pirates — we’ve got you covered. Here’s how to obtain and start your first in-game quests.

How to obtain quests

There are three main sources for quests around an outpost (that’s where you initially spawn): Gold Hoarders, the Order of Souls and the Merchant Alliance.

The Gold Hoarders are always in a small tent, the Order of Souls in a creepy building and the Merchant Alliance is on the pier that leads to your ship.

Walk up to your faction of choice; you can buy up to three quests from each, initially, and they won’t cost you a speck of gold (which is good, ’cause you probably don’t have one to your name at this point).

Quest acquired. Good job!

How to start a quest

With quests — otherwise known as Voyages — in hand, head over to your ship. If you go to the room underneath your steering wheel, you’ll find two tables of great importance: your Map Table and an area to Propose Voyages.

Head to the latter table first (it’s behind you as you walk down the stairs into the room). Interact with the table and pick a Voyage. If you’re on your own, simply “vote” for it to kick it off; if you’re in a crew, you’ll need consensus.

Once a Voyage has been activated, you’ll FINALLY get a map to read. Pull the map dial up with RB (on an Xbox One controller) and then RT to read it. You’ll be shown a small island with a marker for your actual objective.

With your objective — or at least its shape — in mind, head over to the map table and zoom in and out, panning left and right, to find that particular location. As you can see in the image below, Crescent Isle matches the island I was after. You can use the A button to circle a point on a map to then make it easier to navigate to when you set sail. An example of a circled point is all the way at the top of this page.

In the above image, my objective (B10) is NW of my boat (which is at C12)… so all I need to do is sail in that direction. Easier said than done? Don’t worry — we’ve got that covered here.
