Preview: South Park: The Stick of Truth

Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s comedic cartoon creation South Park has been commercially successful as an animated show on television. Revealed in November of 2011, South Park is attempting something new with an RPG title. While at the EB Games Expo, I had the opportunity to see a hands off demonstration of the upcoming title like Steve did before me. Here’s my take on what I saw.

If there’s one thing that can be said for South Park: The Stick of Truth, is that it’s a very authentic and faithful recreation of the South Park world. From graphical style to character representation every part of the title feels like it’s directly from the minds of its creators.

The narrative for the title follows you as the new kid on the block. Having just moved to the town of South Park your parents send you off in typical comedic fashion to make friends with the locals. Upon finding some of the locals and some well-known characters from the series you quickly become embroiled in their game and become a member of the group.

Becoming a member of the group also serves as the moment where you get to customize your character. Selecting from four classes: Fighter, Mage, Thief and Cleric you can take on new abilities that are both unique and comedic.

The battle system for Stick of Truth stays somewhat true to the traditional turn based RPGs.  Parties take it in turn to execute strategically chosen moves to deal damage upon each other that results in members of either party being defeat when opposing forces run out of health points. What is unique about the title is the methods of attack and the abilities that your party can execute. Whether it’s hitting a baseball at the enemy with a baseball bat or using Cartman’s special Flamethrower ability there’s plenty to see, laugh and tactically execute to progress further through the game. Summons also exists – one example being Mr. Slave’s unconventional ability to devour your opponent.

South Park: The Stick of Truth is shaping up to be a promising take on the RPG genre whilst remaining devoutly true to the source material.
