Halo 5: Guardians: There are “no plans” for campaign-based DLC to flesh out new characters

Speaking with 343 Industries’ Brad Welch ahead of GCAP and PAX AUS this week, Stevivor has learned that Halo 5: Guardians won’t be getting any campaign-based DLC anytime soon.

Out tomorrow, Guardians introduces myriad new characters into the franchise. Most notably, Fireteam Osiris is comprised of Halo: Nightfall‘s Jameson Locke, Halo 3: ODST‘s Edward Buck and two newcomers, Spartans Vale and Tanaka.

“We wanted to expand the cast of characters we have,” Welch, Campaign and Sandbox Design Director, said of the new additions. “We wanted to have characters who could take their helmets off – and with Chief, that’s kind of a big deal.

“Particularly in [Halo5, Locke is an outside window into Blue Team,” Welch said. “I think we lost that with 4 – I was just playing 3 again recently, and there were always Marines around. They reflect on how the world sees the Chief and helped him to feel Heroic. Locke gets to look at the Chief and Blue Team from an external perspective.”

With so many new faces, we thought story-based DLC would be a perfect way to flesh out the characters.

“We’ve certainly talked about it, but right now there are no plans to do campaign DLC,” Welsh confirmed.

That’s not to say fans of the Halo franchise can’t learn more about the new characters in other ways.

“There are novels out though – one for Tanaka and one for Vale – and the Fall of Reach animated series which comes with the Collector’s [edition],” Welsh said. “That’s another way for people to get a bunch of extra story on the console.”

There are further opportunities in-game as well.

“We try to also do a lot of storytelling through character conversations, back and forth. If you explore, you’ll find more extended conversations; the more you play and explore, the more lore you can get from the game. There’s a lot more from Osiris talking about Blue team, illustrating events for players,” Welsh added.

Halo 5: Guardians is out tomorrow on Xbox One. Our review of the game goes live at 6.00pm AEDT today.
