Star Wars: Battlefront will be the first Dolby Atmos supported game, but only on PC

During Star Wars: Battlefront’s media briefing during Star Wars Celebration it was revealed that it will be the first game ever to make use of Dolby Atmos as an audio setting.

Dolby Atmos will only be available players of the PC version of Battlefront as both the PS4 and Xbox One are unfortunately not supported. Dolby Atmos was developed in the Dolby Labs and first announced in 2012 and first used in Pixar’s Brave later that same year.

Atmos uses 128 audio tracks to create a virtual sound bubble around the listener, immersing them in 3D sound. During the presentation we were shown a short clip that transitioned from stereo sound through to surround and then into Atmos. While the difference wasn’t hugely noticeable it was present and I’m assuming that if you use Atmos on a regular basis going back to surround will be like going back to SD after using HD.

Star Wars: Battlefront will be available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on 17 on November 2015.
