DICE: Star Wars: Battlefront will run at 60fps across all three platforms, aims for photo-realism

According to DICE Producer Craig McLeod, Star Wars: Battlefront will run at 60fps across all three platforms, PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

According to McLeod, “We’re making sure, first and foremost, to ensure it runs at 60 frames per second on everything because that’s what delivers the best gameplay experience.” Alongside the game running at 60fps, it’s clear that graphical fidelity and photo-realism is high on the agenda for DICE.

McLeod said, “When you couple the talent that we have in the office with the technology and new generation of consoles has allowed us to achieve, that’s how you can get these environments that you’re seeing which simply wasn’t possible before,” and it’s true that that Battlefront is breathtakingly gorgeous to look at. This is in part due to two pieces of technology known as; PBR (Physically Based Rendering) and photogrammetry, coupled with DICE’s proprietary Frostbite engine.

During the special media briefing for Star Wars: Battlefront, Design Director Niklas Fegraeus talked through how DICE had been invited into the Star Wars archives to assist in authenticity when creating the game. By using photogrammetry, the team at DICE had been able to faithfully recreate objects, costumes and materials that had appeared in the original Star Wars films. Photogrammerty is the process of photographing an object from all possible angles and funneling that data through software to create an exact digital 3D model of the photographed object.

By using PBR, DICE was able to give the objects the real, physical properties of the materials they’re simulating rather than adding the visual data of the material to the object. Combining this with photogrammerty and the Frostbite engine has allowed DICE to create some amazingly photo-realistic graphics.

While how many pixels Battlefront would run in wasn’t mentioned, be rest assured that DICE is promising 60fps whether you’re playing on PlayStation, Xbox or PC.

Star Wars: Battlefront will be available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on 17 November 2015.
