Washington Redskins to be replaced with interim “generic” team in Madden NFL 21

The Washington Redskins will be replaced with an interim “generic” team name and logo when Madden NFL 21 will hit store shelves, EA has confirmed.

The news comes as the Redskins announced a change of name after corporations like FedEx threatened to pull ad spend over the pejorative name.

“We are pleased to see Washington’s decision to change their team name and visual identity,” EA told Polygon. “We are quickly working to update Madden NFL 21 to feature a generic Washington team, while we await final word on the updated team name and logo design.”

EA continued on to advise that while “players may continue to see some outdated Washington references in other areas of the game at launch,” it is “committed to removing all of those from the game in additional title updates coming shortly after launch.”

Madden NFL 21 heads to Windows PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Stadia where available from 25 August. An Xbox Series X and PS5 launch will come at the same time the next-gen consoles are released.
