The author of The Witcher doesn’t receive royalties from CD Projekt RED’s games

Andrzej Sapkowski, author of The Witcher series of novels and short stories, has confessed he does not receive royalties from CD Projekt RED’s Witcher games.

“I was stupid enough to sell [CD Projekt RED the] rights to the whole bunch,” he told Eurogamer. “They offered me a percentage of their profits. I said, ‘No, there will be no profit at all – give me all my money right now! The whole amount.’ It was stupid. I was stupid enough to leave everything in their hands because I didn’t believe in their success. But who could foresee their success? I couldn’t.”

The developer approached Sapkowski in the early 2000s, with Sapkowski saying he received what he expected from the exchange.

“A big bag of money. That is all,” he said.

While the author wouldn’t divulge exact dollar amounts, CD Projekt RED co-founder Marcin Iwinski has said it “wasn’t a huge amount of money”.

In the end, Sapkowski is quite pleased with CD Projekt RED’s games.

“[The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt] is made very well, and they merit all of the beneficiaries they get from it,” he said. “They merit it. The game is very good, well done, well done.”

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is currently available on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4.
