StarCraft II match-fixing sends twelve to jail in Korea

Twelve people, including three pro gamers, have been arrested in Chanwon, Korea after fixing StarCraft II matches.

Most of the non-gamers were financial backers and brokers. Some of those individuals have connections to organised crime syndicates in the country.

The three pro gamers who’ve been arrested as match-fixers include coach Gerrard and two Prime players, YoDa and BBoongBBoong. All three have been banned for life from the Korean Esports Organisation.

“Since 2010, [we have] worked alongside the rest of the industry to fight against the illegal betting that has continued to threaten the foundation of Esports,” the Korean Esports Organisation said via statement.

“It is extremely regrettable that a related incident has occurred again, and we apologise to all of the fans who have shown Esports their love and support.”

Coach Gerrard has been charged with facilitating the fixing, allegedly paying the pro gamers to purposefully lost matches. He’s also been charged with illegal online gambling to the sum of over $50,000 USD.
