Star Trek Online ships now canon in Star Trek Picard

How cool is this?!?

Four Star Trek Online ships are now canon thanks to appearances in Star Trek Picard Season 2.

Spoilers for the first episode of Star Trek Picard Season 2 Episode 1, “The Star Gazer”, continue past this point.

Episode one of the show’s second season starts off with bang — quite literally. A large spatial anomaly — caused by the Borg as we later find out — calls for an armada of Starfleet ships to respond. Included in that fleet are four different designs from Star Trek Online itself.

They include the the Galaxy-class variant Gargarin Miracle Worker Battlecruiser, a Sovereign- and Galaxy-class combo the Legendary Ross Command Exploration Cruiser, the Nebula-class variant Sutherland Advanced Research Vessel and the Miranda-class variant Reliant Advanced Light Cruiser, all seen below.

Moreover, Star Trek Online‘s Cryptic confirmed that Thomas Marrone (Associate Art Director) and Hector Ortiz (Senior Concept Artist) were both tasked to collaborate with Picard‘s production team on the newly christened U.S.S. Stargazer, NCC-82893, a Sagan-class vessel fitted with Borg technology that serves to honour Picard’s first command, the original Constellation-class Stargazer.

Unrelated, those same scenes with the Starfleet armada also provide our first live action look at the Luna-class starship (as seen in animated form on Star Trek Lower Decks), the return of the U.S.S. Excelsior and a Sovereign-class variant that seems to mirror designs made by Star Trek Nemesis John Eaves that meant to serve as an Enterprise refit following the events of the film. Coincidentally, Eaves’ design also made it into Star Trek Online.

You can get a decent look at all the ships we’ve detailed above thanks to media found in this embedded tweet:

“As a childhood fan of Star Trek and Star Trek ships, I have spent my life fascinated with the incredible machines that boldly took our heroes into the final frontier,” said Marrone. “Now, thanks to our collaboration with Picard, I can say that starships my team has created for Star Trek Online are now a part of the larger Star Trek canon. It was an incredible honor for us to contribute to the larger Star Trek Universe and we were thrilled to see them in action on Picard last night.

“It’s been such a great honor working with the STO people because they are passionate people who know Star Trek design,” added Picard Production Designer, Dave Blass. They know how to design a Federation starship and it’s so important, both to me and the fans, to work with collaborators who can capture the nuance of these ships, down to the last detail. They made my life so much easier and we got to use the best possible ships on Picard. It’s going to be an amazing experience for all the fans.”

Star Trek Picard airs on Paramount+ in the USA, Crave in Canada and Amazon Prime Video elsewhere in the world. We expect Season 2 to kick off at around 10.00 am AEDT today, 4 March, here in Australia. Star Trek Online is currently available on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4.
