Stadia shuts down January 2023 as devs scramble to preserve saves

Good thing it really doesn't impact us Aussies, eh?

Google Stadia will shut down in January 2023, prompting many developers to scramble to preserve Stadia saves on PC equivalents so players aren’t totally put out.

Stadia will be shuttered on 18 January 2023, with Google refunding all Stadia hardware, games and add-on content that was purchased through the Google and Stadia Stores. Refunds should be processed by around mid-January.

“A few years ago, we also launched a consumer gaming service, Stadia,” Stadia’s Phil Harrison said in a blog post announcing the news.

“While Stadia’s approach to streaming games for consumers was built on a strong technology foundation, it hasn’t gained the traction with users that we expected so we’ve made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service.”

Stadia was never officially available within Australia.

Alongside the news comes confirmations that save transfer systems are on the way.

First, Ubisoft said it’s working on a way to transfer Stadia saves to PC via Ubisoft Connect. A timeframe for the tool wasn’t provided.

Developers IO Interactive (Hitman) and Bungie (Destiny 2) are also working on similar tools.

We’ll report back as more is known about save transfers.
