Sledgehammer fires back: CoD Modern Warfare 3 “years in the making”

The studio is "incredibly proud" of the maligned shooter.

Sledgehammer Games has fired back amidst criticism of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, saying that its “incredibly proud” of its work that’s been “years in the making”.

“We’re incredibly proud of Modern Warfare III – both the full game experience at launch and the upcoming year of content we have planned for the community,” Sledgehammer head Aaron Halon said in a statement.

“On behalf of the extremely talented team across Sledgehammer Games and our partner studios with whom we’ve collaborated on development, this has been a labour of love to lead the first ever back-to-back sequel in Call of Duty. We cannot wait to see our community’s reaction to all that the entire game has to offer, across Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies.

“From the start of development, we have all been laser-focused on creating the next groundbreaking Call of Duty game. Long before we wrapped up our previous game, we heard loud and clear from fans about the desire to stay and play together for longer within the same series. And that’s what we’ve delivered – the first true sequel in franchise history. It is also why we added features like Carry Forward for the first time to honour the investment our players have made in the Modern Warfare series.

“We’re proud to be the team to lead the way on Modern Warfare III,” Halon’s statement finishes. “We have worked hard to deliver on this vision which has been years in the making. Anything said to the contrary is simply not true – this is our game and we cannot wait to play it online with all of you.”

The statement follows a Bloomberg report that states Modern Warfare 3 spent just 16 months in development, or roughly half the time of a standard Call of Duty release. It follows other reporting that suggests Modern Warfare 3 was originally conceived as a piece of Modern Warfare 2 DLC — a claim easier to digest when considering both Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 are now in the same (equally maligned) Call of Duty launcher.

Modern Warfare 3 isn’t faring very well with critics, currently sitting on a 56 on OpenCritic and a 51 (PS5) on Metacritic.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is out now on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PS4 and PS5. Stevivor’s own Friendly Fire Show podcast will cover the title as part of its weekly drops.
