Ruby Rose’s character won’t be recast in Batwoman

Ruby Rose’s character of Kate Kane will not be recast in the wake of Rose’s depature from Batwoman after a single season, with the show’s producers instead opting to introduce a new character to take over the mantle of the heroine.

A report from Decider cites a leaked casting call detailing a character called Ryan Wilder, a female in her mid-late 20s. With the casting call open to females of any ethnicity, it also confirmed that “Ryan Wilder is about to become Batwoman.”

The casting call also made great strides to declare Wilder will be nothing like Rose’s Kane. “She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed,” it states. “She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her.”

The casting call also specifies that “performers who identify as LGBTQ are encouraged to submit,” so it’s likely that Wilder will be a queer ally if not queer herself.

Rose’s departure from Batwoman was announced in late May; at the time, it was assumed the CW would merely recast another actor in the same role.
