Resident Evil 4 has a rare, horrific game-breaking bug in Chapter 12

Avoid it at all costs.

Resident Evil 4 has a massively game-breaking bug in Chapter 12, preventing those from continuing on if impacted (and without a bevy of backup saves, of course).

A spoiler-light version of the bug is as follows: The bug in question comes after a cutscene at the beginning of Chapter 12 in which Leon will be awarded a very important key. If players start attacking a target with their knife before this item is awarded, it mightn’t make it into their inventory.

The key is absolutely needed to progress further on.

A spoiler-filled version of the bug is as follows: After the first knife fight with Krauser, stop using your knife. Doing so will ensure you’re awarded Luis’ Key, which is needed to unlock a very important door down the track.

“We intend to fix this issue in a future update and apologize for any inconvenience,” Capcom said in a post.

“After the update has been applied, players will be able to continue the game even with the saved data where the error previously occured.”

The Resident Evil 4 remake is now available on Windows PC via Steam, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4 and PS5; we reviewed it here.
