Prime Video adds ads in February (unless you pay more)

Australia is immune... for now.

Prime Video will add ads in the form of “limited advertisements” to its range of TV shows and movies from February 2024, it has today told subscribers in certain regions. For now, Australia will remain ad-free, but is slated to be swapped over later in 2024.

In an email, Amazon told subscribers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada that they can pay an additional $2.99 per month to hide the ads

“Starting February 5, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements,” an email to subscribers reads. “This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time.

“We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than traditional TV and other streaming TV providers,” it continued. “No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership.”

In the email to subscribers, Amazon highlighted that Prime Video is of course part of an Amazon Prime subscription, which also includes free Prime shipping via the Amazon storefront, Amazon Music Prime, Prime Gaming, and other benefits.

Regions including Australia, France, Italy, Spain and Mexico will have ads added to content later in the year. We’ll let you know when Australia is up on the chopping block.
