Playable Hyrule Warriors demo coming E3 alongside a new trailer and character announcements

Tecmo Koei has announced plans to bring a playable demo of Hyrule Warriors to this year’s E3 in addition to a new gameplay trailer and announcements of new playable characters.

Speaking with Famistu — as translated by Siliconera — General Producer Hisashi Koinuma and Producer Yosuke Hayashi said they hoped the demo and trailer would give fans “a better idea of what we’re trying to do.” Alongside the demo and trailer it was also revealed that playable characters other than Link will be announced.

Famitsu suggested that Tecmo Koei’s Warriors franchise is so popular, in part, due to the vast number of characters available and asked whether players can expect a similar level of choice when playing Hyrule Warriors. Koinuma agreed that the large cast of characters was one aspect that drew fans to the Warriors games and that Hyrule Warriors would be no exception.

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma — who was also on hand during the interview — said “Out of all the playable characters [in Hyrule Warriors], there are some surprising characters that made us say ‘why did you pick this one?!”

The interview also broached the topic of weapon selection for the characters with Hayashi confirming that players would be able to change weapons and thereby change their character’s fighting style. New weapons and items will be acquired by opening treasure chests accompanied by the iconic musical flourish and animation from the main Zelda games. According to Aonuma ” This is actually a very valuable scene [in The Legend of Zelda]. And this also applies to Hyrule Warriors.”

While The Legend of Zelda series is well known for its inventive and puzzle-style boss fights Hyrule Warriors will instead follow in the footsteps of previous Warriors games. Hayashi believes the boss fights in Zela games are of a very high quality and that the team developing Hyrule Warriors wouldn’t be able to emulate them, so instead boss fights will see the player face off against waves of smaller enemies to charge up a special meter and then attack the boss.

Hyrule Warriors will be available exclusively for Wii U in Japan 14 August. A release date in the west has not yet been announced.
