Layoffs hit Gearbox following sale to Take-Two

Saw that coming...

Layoffs have hit Gearbox after the developer was confirmed to have been sold to 2K parent company Take-Two Interactive.

The layoffs have impacted those at Gearbox who are not tied to the development of games, and include the likes of Gearbox PR manager Jennifer Locke. Taking to social media, Locke said that she and “countless others” had lost their jobs.

Gearbox confirmed the layoffs, but didn’t detail the number of former employees who had lost their jobs.

“As we strive towards our mission to entertain the world, we are grateful that our talent and capability are of interest to you and your audience,” Gearbox said in a statement to Eurogamer. “The Embracer Group will continue to report on their restructuring program that impacted some parts of Gearbox today that are not tied to the development of Gearbox Software games.”

Late last month, it was confirmed that Take-Two had purchased Gearbox Entertainment from Embracer Group for $460 million USD. Gearbox Publishing — including Gearbox Publishing San Francisco and Star Trek Online‘s Cryptic Studios — remain at Embracer Group following the deal.

“Our acquisition of Gearbox is an exciting moment for Take-Two and will strengthen our industry-leading creative talent and portfolio of owned intellectual property, including the iconic Borderlands franchise,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two.
