Larian isn’t making Baldur’s Gate 4, nor Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC

It's time for "a new thing".

After years on Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios is calling it quits on the game, working on “a new thing” instead of a sequel or DLC.

“I told you at the beginning that we were a company of big ideas” Larian head Swen Vincke said at GDC. “We are not a company that is made to create DLCs [or] expansions. We tried that actually a few times, it failed every time. It’s not worth it. Life is too short, and our ambitions are very large.”

Whle Vincke asserted that Baldur’s Gate 3 will “always have a warm place in our hearts”, he said the studio is looking forward to a new challenge.

“We’ll forever be proud of it, but we won’t continue it. We’re not going to make new expansions which everybody is expecting us to do,” he continued. “We’re not going to make Baldur’s Gate 4, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re going to move on. We’re going to move away from DnD and we’re going to start making a new thing.”

Vincke concluded by saying that, “it’s going to be up to [D&D IP holder] Wizards of the Coast… to find somebody to take the torch”.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available on Windows PC, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PS5. It won the honours of Best Direction and Best RPG of 2023 in our recent Stevivor Game of the Year awards.
