Harmonix will move heaven and earth to support old instrument hardware in Rock Band 4

Project director at Harmonix Daniel Sussman has reiterated the company’s stance on supporting last generation instruments with Rock Band 4. In an interview with Business Insider, Sussman says “we’re planning to support everything that we can” including both Guitar Hero and Rock Band legacy hardware.

Instrument compatibility is one of the biggest challenges Harmonix faces with Rock Band 4, general interest in the revival of music games sits between “I want to play them again” and “I don’t want to buy more plastic guitars” and not overcoming this technical limitation will be a dealbreaker for many gamers. Harmonix isn’t talking in absolutes yet, there are a lot of words like “planning” and “possible” there, but if they can’t manage to support the old instrument hardware it won’t be for lack of trying.

Support for the new, six button Guitar Hero Live controller was another issue Sussman talked about and was non-committal until Harmonix gets their hands on the hardware. Rock Band 4 is set for release later this year.
