Google offers its Stadia tech to other companies

Meeting Google's Immersive Stream for Games

Google has today offered its Stadia game streaming technology to other companies as part of a concept called Immersive Stream for Games.

Google unveiled the program at a Google for Games Developer Summit held earlier in the week.

“The Google for Games Developer Summit is designed to support studios of every size, with tools and innovations from teams across Google,” Stadia’s Dov Zimring said to TechCrunch.

“The core features we’re talking about today are benefitting both the development journey and player experience for Immersive Stream for Games customers, including Stadia. In partnership with Google Cloud, we’re working to build out the underlying cloud gaming technology that powers both Stadia and our customers’ offerings via Immersive Stream for Games. A rising tide for cloud gaming lifts Immersive Stream for Games as well as Stadia, and we’re excited for what’s to come in 2022 and beyond.”

Google has already used the program to offer Batman Arkham Knight to AT&T subscribers as part of a proof of concept. Google says the new service would allow companies to offer storefronts, subscription bundles or game trials to users.

Google began to deprioritise Stadia back in February of last year, shutting down its first-party studios in the process.

“Creating best-in-class games from the ground up takes many years and significant investment, and the cost is going up exponentially,” Google said at the time, adding that its “focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships” trumped internal game development.
