Three dead in mass shooting at Madden 19 tournament [UPDATED]

Update 3: EA CEO, Andrew Wilson, has shared a statement regarding the shooting.

“First and foremost, it is an unthinkable tragedy that Taylor Robertson and Elijah Clayton, two of our top Madden competitors, lost their lives in this way. They were respected, positive and skilled competitors, the epitome of the players and personalities at the heart of our community,” he began.

Wilson’s full statement can be found here.

Update 2: Jacksonville Policy have identified the two players fatally shot and killed in yesterday’s tragic incident.

The victims have been identified as 22-year-old Elijah ‘TruBoy’ Clayton of Woodland Hills, California and 28-year-old Taylor ‘SpotMePlzz’ Robertson of Giles, West Virginia.

Update: Jacksonville Police now confirm that three people were fatally shot, including the gunman, contradicting earlier reports of four dead.

The lone gunman has also been confirmed as 24-year-old David Katz of Baltimore.

Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, competitor Steven ‘Steveyj’ Javaruski said Katz was a disgruntled fellow player who “targeted a few people” before shooting and killing himself.

The EA Sports’ Madden Twitter account has also issued a statement in the wake of the tragedy.

Original story: A mass shooting has occurred at a Madden 19 tournament in Jacksonville, Florida.

The shooting occurred at the GLHF Game Bar, which was hosting a qualifying event for a Madden NFL 19 tournament that was sanctioned by EA.

Reports suggest 11 people were shot — UF Health Jacksonville has confirmed it has received six of those who were shot, including one in serious condition. The organisation said that at least three of those patients were shot once, and three were shot more than once. So far, four people have been confirmed as killed in the incident.

One player, Drini Gjoka, has called this the “Worst day of my life,” later tweeting that one bullet hit him in the thumb.

One suspect — identified only as a white man — was shot dead on the scene, local police have confirmed.

The event was being livestreamed on Twitch, but the livestream was cut shortly after initial shots rang out.

EA has taken to Twitter in response to the incident, saying, “This is a horrible situation, and our deepest sympathies go out to all involved.”

Our thoughts go out to those impacted by this shooting.
