Enterprise-G only obtainable through paid chance in Star Trek Online

Aka "gambling" to some players.

Starfleet’s newest flagship, the Enterprise-G — or rather, its Constitution III-class starship — will only be obtainable in Star Trek Online through real-world currency and chance.

Or, to most players, “gambling”.

“Infinity Promotion Packs are returning to Star Trek Online on PC this week,” begins a new post from Perfect World.

“You can purchase Infinity Duty Officer Packs, and Infinity Research and Development Packs,” it continued. “The R&D Packs will have a chance to drop the materials for the new Advanced Consoles, and all packs will include a chance at a powerful Tier 6 Starship, including the brand new Consitution III Miracle Worker Cruiser!”

Perfect World also detailed a “permanent” 20% price reduction in the packs.

While the addition of the Enterprise-G has been welcomed by Star Trek Online players, the way in which the starship can be obtained has not. The ability to gain the ship first involves the purchase of a pack with real-world money, and then a chance-based system kicks in to potentially provide access to it.

“Oh look, a hero ship put into gambling and not the Zen store,” wrote HulklingsBoyfriend on Reddit. “Quelle f*cking surprise. This game is embarrassing with that – they’re the hero ships, they of all things should be IN THE ZEN STORE.”

“Even new, regular ships are being put [into] to gamble boxes,” added FeralTribble. “They promised they wouldn’t but you don’t make a quick profit by keeping promises and being honest.”

For those unaware, the Zen Store mentioned is an in-game marketplace that charges real-world money for specific items. If the Enterprise-G was added to the Zen Store, it would mean a guaranteed purchase without any mechanisms involving chance or luck.

With that in mind, some players are holding out for the chance the ship will eventually make it into the position of a guaranteed sale.

“I’m glad that there’s a model in the game, but there’ll probably be a Legendary Connie III offered as part of a C-Store bundle in the future (much like every other ship carrying the Enterprise name) so I reckon I’ll just hold out for that,” wrote MojaveJoe1992.

Star Trek Online is currently available on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4; the Enterprise-G was recently debuted in Star Trek Picard, which is available for streaming on both Paramount+ and Prime Video here in Australia.
