Embracer Group: Gearbox, Saber reportedly in the process of being sold

Lots going on.

Current financial woes at Embracer Group mean a lot of change is reportedly on the way. Reports today suggest that both Gearbox and Saber Interactive are about to be sold off.

First, Kotaku reports that Gearbox head Randy Pitchford has told employees to prepare for three potential scenarios: remaining with Embracer, being sold, or becoming independent (much like Toys for Bob has just done). The report suggests that Gearbox is indeed being sold, with the matter in the “late stages of being finalised”. Kotaku furthers that Pitchford will inform employees of the sale “next month”.

Gearbox, naturally, hasn’t directly commented on the report, but Pitchford told the outlet, “I’m delighted that what we might be up to is interesting enough to people that you want to make a story about us for your readers. I’m honored and humbled that our company is a topic of rumor, speculation, and discussion.”

Next, Bloomberg reports that World War Z‘s Saber Interactive will be purchased by “a group of private investors” for roughly $500 million USD. After the purchase, Saber Interactive would function as a private company.

Embracer purchased Gearbox for $1.3 billion USD back in early 2021, and Saber for $525 million USD in 2020.

We’ll report back as more is known.

Update: This article incorrectly stated that Pitchford told Gearbox employees about its reported sale. This article has been reflected to state that he told employees of a potential sale alongside two other scnearios. We apologise for the error.
