But shouldn't it be the other way around?
The first trailer for the Super Mario Bros movie was today released and features Chris Pratt’s Mario sounding just like Chris Pratt.
That of course makes sense when you think about it, but the general internet sentiment is that Pratt should have tried anything other than his normal speaking voice.
No, really. Take a look.
Chris Pratt's voice is still jarring to hear coming out of Mario but everything else in the Mario trailer looked amazing. I'm genuinely excited to see this thing pic.twitter.com/3QCP7oJc0k

Chris Pratt as Mario is a prime example of why you should hire voice actors for voice acting roles because what the hell is this pic.twitter.com/rOYmQqSXEv

Chris Pratt saying he worked so hard on the Mario voice only for it to sound like Chris Pratt is the funniest thing

Though Pratt is divisive (and for more than just his regular ol’ voice… being tied to the controversial Hillsong Church will do that to you), the internet is largely on board with the movie’s animation style and other casting choices. Jack Black as Bowser, as an example, seems to have gone over quite well.
You can tell Jack Black put a ton of love and heart into his Bowser voice, while Chris Pratt just uh… spoke? Kinda weird but the visuals are absolutely fucking stellar, and I love the general vibe of the whole thing.

jack black’s performance is really solid, the animation is really fun and fluid and colorful, then you cut to mario and. https://t.co/mWnIcNqpKg
