The Diversion: Fan theorises Chile as the location for Destiny’s Tower

Another one for the “people with way to much time on their hands” files, is this theory about the location of the Last City on Earth in Destiny. Reddit user dwntwn_dine_ent_dist has theorised that the Last City and thus The Tower, are located in Chile. This differs from a previous theory that the Last City is in Canada.

By examining the shadows displayed in The Tower and noting that they are always visible he has determined that either the in-game date must be an equinox, the location of The Tower must be on the equator or both. dwntwn_dine_ent_dist is able to rule out option 3 as the sun never passes directly overhead and states that “observing the Earth from the moon, shows the day/night boundary (the terminator line) going through the south pole.” This, says dwntwn_dine_ent_dist, is confirmation that there is an equinox on Earth.

He goes on to claim that as “[s]hadows of vertical objects cast on the level ground by the sun move counterclockwise” the Tower and therefore the Last City must be in the southern hemisphere. “This is consistent with the name ‘North Tower’which is roughly the northwest part of the Tower overall” he suggests, adding “True north is roughly the direction you would walk from Rahool to Xander 99-40.”

In knowing that at an equinox “an observer’s latitude is 90 degrees minus the altitude of the sun at local noon,” dwntwn_dine_ent_dist infers that the latitude of The Tower is 29°. The only three places with land at 29° south are South America, South Africa and Australia.  dwntwn_dine_ent_dist rejects both South Africa and Australia as those locations don’t include mountains as visible surrounding The Tower, leaving Chile as the most likely candidate.

All of this is merely speculation however and if Bungie were simply taking artistic licence with the shadows then the entire theory goes out the window. The Earth may also look very different than it does today, meaning that it could still be somewhere in Australia. We’re going with that.

Destiny is now available for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
