The Diversion: An Amiibo almost won a Smash Bros tournament in Canada

Super Smash Bros. tournament held in Richmond BC, Canada faced the very real prospect of having to award top place to a Fox McCloud Amiibo last weekend.

The full story is over on Siliconera, but the basics are that the Amiibo was entered into the tournament as a joke. The Amiibo — known as WaveShine — then proceeded to defeat human player after human player until it was finally beaten by a player known as Daze in the semi-finals. You can watch the match on Twitch, skip to 1:33:06.

Apparently none of the attendees knew where the Amiibo had come from, but soon realised that the Level 50 AI was more than a match for most players.

Super Smash Bros. will be available for Wii U tomorrow, 29 November. If you’re buying it digitally from the Wii U eShop it will be available from 9pm AEDT tonight.
