Digital PSN version of GTA5 reportedly suffers performance issues not found in retail version

A report by Digital Foundry reveals significant performance issues with the PSN digital version of Grand Theft Auto V compared to its retail disc based counterpart.

Most noticeable — and problematic — are texture pop-in, geometry and shading issues. The problems seem to occur most often during high speed driving through Los Santos’ busy neighbourhoods. The report notes that the game’s opening also suffered delayed textures.

At launch, Rockstar cautioned against installing GTAV’s “Play” disc to users Xbox 360 hardrives and Digital Foundry found that doing so “slows down access times, impacting streaming performance.” Installing both discs to the Xbox 360 HDD caused extensive texture pop-in and missing objects. Digital Foundry found that installing the “Play” disc to an external USB drive solved the issue. The issues with the PSN version are not “as nefarious” as the Xbox 360’s, but noticeable enough to warrant mentioning.

It must be stressed that pop-in to this level isn’t a constant, and only hits in at full force when traveling at breakneck speeds through the busiest streets – and it is largely absent when driving around less built-up areas and almost completely non-existent during on-foot action. Also, this isn’t to say the disc-based release is entirely exempt from pop-in; minor objects like boxes and telephone booths can fade in during synchronized high-stress runs on the very same street, but it’s fair to say the disc version never reaches the same level in these worst-case scenarios.

Have you experienced any issues with you copy of GTAV? What version are you playing?
