Diablo 4 players will need a new character for seasons

Some like the idea... and some hate it.

Diablo 4 director Rod Fergusson has confirmed that the game’s seasons will require a new character for play, and the news is dividing its players.

Season 1 starts in late July, and basically works as a Battle Pass in titles such as Fortnite.

“With each Season comes a new Battle Pass for you to earn rewards from, containing 27 Free Tiers and 63 Premium Tiers,” Blizzard said in a lengthy blog post last month that detailed the feature, but did not specify the need for a new character to access the content.

Taking to Twitter, Fergusson reinforced that need, saying, “to take part in the seasonal questline, mechanics, season journey and battle pass, you will need to create a new seasonal character.

“Playing campaign with seasonal character (if you so desire or need to finish) will also progress the season journey and battle pass,” he added.

The news has been met with like, dislike… and perhaps worse, confusion.

“I’m a new Diablo player and a new dad,” wrote one, seemingly in opposition to the news. “I only have maybe an hour a day to game, if that. So my current character is only level 11. You’re saying I should basically not even play this game then right?”

“People need to remember that not everything is meant for everyone. New ladder [or season] = fresh start every 3-4 months,” wrote another. “You can’t bring your characters or renown over. If you want a forever character then continue to play it on the eternal realm. Otherwise get used to fresh ladder resets.”

Diablo IV now is less ARPG and more MMO,” said another. “It has more sense to increase the level cap (same than Destiny) and let all players to enjoy the game the way they want!”
