Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2019: Release date, cross-play, more

Call of Duty Modern Warfare — aka Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 — was detailed overnight and we’ve all you need to know about the upcoming title below.

Release date and availability

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will head to Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4 on 25 October, Activision Blizzard and Infinity Ward today confirmed.

Moreover, it’s been confirmed that players on PS4 will benefit from content timed exclusivity. While further details haven’t been provided as yet, it’s likely the one-week exclusivity period seen within Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will extend to Modern Warfare.

A soft reboot

“Developed by the studio that started it all, Infinity Ward delivers an epic reimagining of the iconic Modern Warfare series from the ground up,” Activision said of the upcoming release.

An official reveal trailer, below, gives us our first look at the reimagined Captain Price alongside weapons like the FAMAS and AK-47.

“We’ve got Captain Price, but I think it’s important to realise that we didn’t go for a facsimile of the original Captain Price,” Infinity Ward’s Taylor Kurosaki told our friends at AusGamers.

“We could have done that. We could have found a lookalike and a soundalike and, like, [revive] the original Captain Price… [but] it didn’t feel right for us to find a soundalike or a lookalike; try to do a carbon copy of a Captain Price. Because the best thing you’re ever going to get is, ‘Oh, it’s mostly like that guy but you know, it’s not exact’.”

Cross-play

Surprisingly, Activision Blizzard and Infinity Ward confirmed the game will feature cross-play between PC and consoles.

“With the launch of Modern Warfare, we’re taking steps to unite the community,” Infinity Ward’s Patrick Kelly said in a press release. “First, we plan for Modern Warfare to be played together across PC and console through cross-play support.”

… and no Season Pass

“Second, we’re eliminating the traditional season pass,” Kelly continued.

Huge news, eh?

In place of a lack of Season Pass, Infinity Ward will release “more free maps and content” along post-launch events. Just don’t forget about that PS4 timed exclusivity period.
