Photo of assassinated Russian to be removed from Telltale’s Batman

Telltale will remove a photo of an assassinated Russian from the latest episode of its Batman game, The Enemy Within.

The photo, one of Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov moments after he was publicly assassinated in December 2016, appears as Batman reviews security footage in the Batcave. Karlov appears to be photoshopped out of the photo and inserted onto a CG background.

It’s unclear why the famous photo was used by Telltale in such a stock footage format. Regardless, the developer has acknowledged the incident and said it will soon be fixed.

“An update to the game has been submitted this morning that will be removing the image across all platforms,” Telltale said in a statement to Gamasutra.

“We regret this incident occurred, and we are taking appropriate action internally to ensure that we continue to maintain our high standards in Production and Quality Assurance.”

You can compare the real-life photo of Karlov alongside its representation in the Batman Telltale game below.

What do you make of Telltale’s decision to include the image in its game?

Batman: The Enemy Within is an episodic title available on myriad platforms.
