Owner Lachlan McAllister has shed more light on Australia’s first Esports bar, GG EZ.
The Melbourne-based bar is scheduled to open in late August, offering “a quality of food and beverages not yet seen in the Esports event space anywhere in the world,” including Adult Bubble Teas. The venue will also sport an ultra-late license to cater to livestreamed events taking place at all hours of the day.
The venue boasts restaurant-quality food and state-of-the-art screens that will show local and international Esports competitions. McAllister told Stevivor that GG EZ Bar will show “all major Esports” and “pay special focus to up-and-coming and niche titles to help them find a new audience.”
“You find that a large number of Esports fans only follow one game, but what interests them about one title is generally present in others. They just haven’t been paying attention,” McAllister continued. “If you get people exposed to a greater variety of eSport titles, you’ll likely create more knowledgeable, engaged fans and a stronger Esports community.”
Unlike video games-themed bars, GG EZ won’t have playable consoles on hand.
“We won’t be having playable games at the bar because I want to make a dedicated Esports bar that’s closer in style to a cocktail or sports bar rather than a gaming bar,” McAllister asserted.
“I truly believe that Esports is a valid form of entertainment in its own right, much like traditional sports, and it’s time it gets its own venues. Doing this we can introduce as many new people as possible to the idea that watching Esports is just like watching traditional sport and we think that tying it in with playable games at the bar inhibits its ability to be perceived as its own unique product.”
