343 Industries apologises, changes offensive Halo Infinite cosmetic name

The Juneteenth cosmetic was named for an internal toolset, the developer said.

343 Industries has apologised for the name of a Halo Infinite cosmetic that celebrated Juneteenth. The developer has also changed the name accordingly.

When initially released, the Juneteenth cosmetic was named “Bonobo,” which is also the name of an endangered ape.

In the United States of America, Juneteenth is an annual holiday that celebrates the emanicipation of slaves.

Taking to Twitter, 343 head Bonnie Ross apologised for the cosmetic’s name.

“We were made aware of a palette option for our Juneteenth emblem that contained a term that was offensive and hurtful. The team immediately addressed this issue via an update,” she wrote.

“We are a studio and franchise that is committed to inclusivity where everyone is welcome and supported to be their true self. On behalf of 343, I apologise for making a celebrated moment a hurtful moment.”

343’s John Junyszek also addressed the issue.

“We strive to create diverse and inclusive gaming communities,” he wrote. “While the original name refers to an internal toolset, it was not intended to be applied to this content and we recognize the harm it may have caused.”

The cosmetic has since renamed to “Freedom”.

Halo Infinite is currently available on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X; it’s also part of Xbox and PC Game Pass.
