How to transfer your GTA 5 save from last- to current-gen

Smart Delivery, this ain't.

Grand Theft Auto 5 heads to current-gen PS5 and Xbox Series consoles next week, though players currently on PS4 or Xbox One won’t be able to take advantage of free upgrades. Thankfully, players will be able to transfer their save between iterations.

This guide will detail how you can do that.

How to transfer your GTA5 save from last- to current-gen

First, it needs to be noted that transfers can only be between platforms, so PlayStation to Xbox or vice-versa. Xbox to Xbox and PlayStation to PlayStation transfers are, of course, also acceptable.

If you’re ready to transfer your progress, do the following:

  • Open up Grand Theft Auto 5 on PS4 or Xbox One (you can do this using backwards compatibility on your current-gen console)
  • Pause the game and go to the Game tab
  • Find Upload Save Game and complete the prompts (see image above)
  • Open up Grand Theft Auto 5 on PS5 or Xbox Series X and follow the prompts

It’s also important to understand that the save transfer progress is a one-time only affair, and your game save has to be transferred from last- to current-gen within 90 days of 15 March 2022.

First, a Rockstar Social Account is required to transfer progress from last- to current-gen. Thankfully, the process is automated from there!

It needs to be noted that any earned GTA$ will transfer from last- to current-gen regardless of platform, though purchased GTA$ is locked between PlayStation platforms or Xbox platforms.

Expect Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA V) on PS5 and Xbox Series S & X from 15 March 2022. It’s already available on Windows PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4.
