Dead Space Marker Fragments guide: How to get the alternate ending

Make us whole.

Dead Space is out now, and an intriguing new addition to the mix is a New Game Plus mode that contains collectible Marker Fragments. Said fragments are all-important when it comes to unlocking the remake’s alternate ending.

We know there are 12 total fragments to find — as evidenced by a mechanism in the Captain’s quarters in the Executive Quarters area of Crew Quarters, seen above. The Marker Fragments don’t appear in the first run of the game, so the little shrine that the captain prepares is bare. Find markers in New Game Plus, though, and the shrine updates in real time.

Twelve spots for Marker Fragments means twelve markers to find — and again, all fragments need to be found playing New Game Plus, so one full completion is required ahead of time.

  • Marker Fragment 1/12: This is in the same room as the Data Board in Enginerring (Hangar-Cargo-Tram Control; Floor 1 – Maintenance Bay). You’ll also get the Marked Achievement or Trophy for picking up your first fragment.
  • Marker Fragment 2/12: This is in Dr Kyne’s office, but you’ll need to use Kinesis to move a false wall and reveal a secret little area. (Medical; Floor 1 – De. T. Kyne – CSO office)
  • Marker Fragment 3/12: When you’re in the large engine room re-igniting the engines, this is tucked away around a corner. (Engineering; Floor 3 – Engine Room)
  • Marker Fragment 4/12: Once you make it to the bridge area, you’ll find this in a break room in front of a video of the marker itself. (Bridge; Floor 1 – Break Room)
  • Marker Fragment 5/12: This one’s front-and-centre in that jerk Mercer’s office. (Medical; Floor 4 – Dr. C. Mercer – 250 office)
  • Marker Fragment 6/12: This one is on top of the big cryo device that you used to freeze the Hunter. (Medical; Floor 4 – Cryogenics)
  • Marker Fragment 7/12: Turn off the gravity on the Hydroponics’ East Grow Area and you’ll find this floating in the air. (Hydroponics; Floor 4 – East Grow Area)
  • Marker Fragment 8/12: While you’re on the hunt for the SOS Beacon, you’ll find this on a shelf in the mining area. (Mining; Floor 5 – Mineral Samples)
  • Marker Fragment 9/12: When you’re in the large Communications Hub fixing the array, look to a little nook to the left of the comms board. (Communications Hub; Floor 2)
  • Marker Fragment 10/12: You’ll find this next one in the lowermost Deluxe Shift Bunks. (Crew Quarters; Floor 3 – Deluxe Shift Bunks)
  • Marker Fragment 11/12: This is also in the Crew Quarters area, accessible after you see/speak with Dr Kyne. (Crew Quarters; Floor 3 – Inquiry Desks)
  • Marker Fragment 12/12: This one’s in the large cargo bay area where you’re first moving the marker. Don’t forget to grab Peng! (Hangar-Cargo-Tram Control; Floor 1 – Cargo Bay)

With all 12 Marker Fragments in hand, head back to the Captain’s quarters (in Crew Quarters) and activate the shrine. Then, finish the game as normal. Enjoy that new ending!

If you work better off a video, we’ve got one — including the ending itself — below.
