Tumblr alternatives to consider after the site drops adult content

Tumblr’s about to close its doors on adult content, and we’ve a list of Tumblr alternatives you might want to look into joining.

From 17 December, Tumblr will ban adult-themed photography, illustrations and videos of sexual acts, representations of full-frontal genitalia and female-presenting nipples. If that’s your thing, we’re not here to judge — but we will give you other sites to check out.

They’re all below, with a bit of a blurb about each:

Your own PC

Don’t forget that we’ve already detailed how those on Windows PC can easily download any Tumblr blog they’d like before the content ban. The obvious downside to this is that you won’t get any new content. That’s what the other links are for.

Twitter

You can basically do whatever you want on Twitter these days, so what’s some adult content?

If you’re curious if your favourite blogs have made the move over to Twitter, you can check out the Tumblr Exodus Lifeboat spreadsheet — it’s got more than 1,000 Twitter equivalents of former Tumblr blogs.

Reddit

Good ol’ Reddit — if you can think of a kink, there’s likely a subreddit exclusively dedicated to it. We’ll let you search for the things you’re most interested in.

Want some previously curated lists? Easy — head over to r/multihub and use the search function to find something that suits you.

Timbr

Timbr was built by Krill Nikolaev after Tumblr made the announcement it would remove adult content. The site offers a handy transfer tool — stick your Tumblr blog’s name or log in with your Tumblr credentials and you can make a copy of your site on Timbr. Easy as.

Pillowfort

Pillowfort looks and responds almost identically to Tumblr, so you can imagine it’s been a favourite place for Tumblr bloggers to turn to. The problem with that is that Pillowfort’s still in beta, so recently had to turn off new sign-ups while it copes with demand.

On 14 December, the site said it absorbed 10,000 new users over the last two weeks — once the site can scale up, expect a lot more than that.

Cumblr

You can probably tell by its name, but Cumblr wants to be your new home for fapping.

The site isn’t live yet, but it plans to launch soon and should provide the option to import your own Tumblr blog into it, providing you’ve exported it from Tumblr ahead of the big censorship hammer.

“We plan to give our community an update before the end of the week,” the site’s landing page reads. Stay tuned.

TumblrX

Like Cumblr, TumblrX seems a work in progress. The site has some functionality at present, but mostly exists as a technical demo until the platform moves to its permanent home at tumblrX.com.

Mojo Fire

Mojo Fire‘s another site that’s not up yet, but plans to offer services similar to Tumblr before the content ban. You can check it out here.

The Internet Wayback Machine

This isn’t so much an alternative as a time capsule, but we digress. The Archive Team has been working hard to backup Tumblr blogs for the Internet Wayback Machine, meaning you could scroll through them whenever you felt so included. To date, the team has saved more than 100,000 Tumblr blogs.
