Pokémon Go: Advanced tips to catch ’em all!

Pokémon Go has so many layers, and we’re here to help you understand them all!

First, if you’re new to the game, it’s best to check out our getting started guide. It’s got all you need to know about Pokémon, Gyms, Lures and more.

If you’re already at intermediate or even advanced levels of play, this post is for you.

Finding rare Pokémon

You’re probably swimming in Pidgeys and Zubats, but occasionally, you’ll notice that a rare Pokémon pops up on your radar. All that’s left is to track it down.

Here’s the best way to find those tricky creatures, thanks to DJToaster and TheColorlessPill:

Generally, each footprint in the Nearby screen corresponds to about 100 metres.

Incense may or may not make the experience a bit easier. I’ve personally found that incense attracts Pokémon that aren’t already on your nearby list.

Do something useful with Pidgeys, Zubats and other plentiful Pokémon

Yeah yeah, we know — there are Zubats everywhere. If you’re swimming in Pokéballs, that might actually play out to your advantage.

Plentiful Pokémon like Zubat, Pidgey, Caterpie don’t require that much Candy to evolve, and evolving Pokémon provides XP. Rather than sending all those useless Pokémon straight to Professor Willow, make sure to evolve as many as you can.

As examples, grabbing a Zubat nets you 100XP for catching it and you can evolve it to Gobat for another 500XP. That’s a higher-priced exchange, requiring 50 Candy. Pidgey gives the same XP, but only needs 12 Candies to evolve. Simple, right?

Know which eggs hatch which Pokémon

It’s a safe bet that you’re not going to hatch a Snorlax from a 2km egg, but it has happened. The image below shows what’s more likely to hatch:

Serebii has a full list right here.

It’s generally accepted that you can hatch an egg whilst driving a car, provided you’re going less than 20km an hour. For the love of everything holy, don’t do anything stupid on the roads though. It’s better (for you, especially!) to walk it out. Also, Pokémon Go uses your phone’s in-built pedometer to help gauge distance alongside GPS data. If you’re all about hatching and not about catching, you can turn Battery Saver on (via Settings in the top-right of your main screen) and then turn your phone around to turn off its screen.

There’s an excellent post on Reddit, here, which details what trainers will receive when they level up.
