Microsoft revokes Red Dead Redemption backwards compatibility on Xbox One

Microsoft’s Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb today confirmed the company had revoked Xbox One backwards compatibility access to Red Dead Redemption for the time being.

Hryb took to Reddit to say that the game hasn’t yet been tested internally, and as such, access would be revoked until Microsoft is certain he game functions as expected.

“Microsoft tests all Xbox 360 games with our emulator to ensure a quality experience across a breadth of titles,” Hryb said. “Due to an error, some of the games currently in test were accidentally made available. We have since removed access to those games, and apologize for any confusion this may have caused. We will have more information on upcoming releases soon.”

Additional titles were also revoked, but Hryb didn’t name them individually.

Hryb also took to Twitter to apologise for the situation.

We’ve had a reader report that his copy of Red Dead Redemption, downloaded late last night, still works on the Xbox One console he downloaded it to. Unfortunately, saving — via the Xbox One cloud saving system — isn’t supported, meaning you’ll have to start a new game each time you load up the title.

We’ll have more on this as it becomes available.
